Lifting lug stress analysis – Applied Solid Mechanics (Oct. 2023 - Dec. 2023)
Technologies and Skills: Abaqus FEA, Fusion360, Python, Matrix Manipulation, Probability and Statistics
The brief for this project was to conduct a stress analysis into the loading of a safety critical component within a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) carrier.
In this project, I conducted a comprehensive stress convergence analysis using ABAQUS Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate deflection and stress which were both plotted in Python against analytical predictions to assess the accuracy of the model.
Stress matrices were formed from strain gauge data and were manipulated to find principal stresses plot safety factors for 3 failure modes with varying applied forces. Paris’ Law for crack propagation was then integrated in order to ensure the component had <1% probability of failure through crack propagation under cyclic loading.
